Incorporated in 1900, Bellwood is a suburban city of Chicago located 13 miles west of the Loop. Though it is predominately a residential community, it has a strong manufacturing base. Modern-day Bellwood remained mostly prairie land dedicated to farming until the late 19th century. In the 1890s, two subdivisions were built, with the first one attracting a small number of businesses, which included a few taverns. It was the owners of these taverns who pushed for the town’s incorporation in order to block its annexation with the other subdivision. Between 1920 and 1930, Bellwood experienced steady growth, with many of the immigrants being of Russian and German descent. During the 1930s, there was another growth spurt after the annexation of land west of Mannheim Road. Large industries began to move into Bellwood after World War II, some of which were built along the Indiana Harbor Belt. Around the same time, four rail passenger services boosted further residential development. At present, a few large companies still call Bellwood home, and while others have since left the area, there is still a number of newer commercial enterprises in Bellwood.
