Downers Grove got its beginning in the 1830s when a religious evangelist named Pierce Downer moved to the area from Wampsville, New York. Downer had initially heard about the area in a letter from his son who was working in Chicago as a mason. Legend has it that Downer traveled to Illinois alone and ended up setting up a camp in a grove of trees near two ancient Native American trails. He ended up purchasing 160 acres of prairie and timberland for $1.25 an acre. In 1882, the Black Hawk War started in the form of raids conducted by a group of Sauks, Meskwakis, and Kickapoos under the leadership of the Sauk leader Black Hawk, leading to many settlers fleeing to Chicago, which was nothing but a small town in those days. After the arrest of Black Hawk and his band of warriors, the United States government signed a series of treaties with all the tribes involved, which eventually led to the Native American conceding large swaths of land in the area. As peace returned to the area, large groups of settlers from the Northeastern United States and Northern Europe began migrating to the area between the 1840s and 1850s. In 1862, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad extended through Downers Grove from Chicago, which also helped encourage its initial growth and development.
Potential home buyers looking to purchase real estate in Downers Grove are attracted to the area for a long list of reasons, with the most prominent one being its proximity to Chicago. Another alluring aspect is the small-town atmosphere maintained by Downers Grove, with an assortment of All American activities available to its residents. A great example of this is Morton Arboretum, covering 1,700 acres and featuring 200,000 cataloged plants, 4,100 different plant species, along with hiking trails and roads for vehicles. Then there is Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve located in southern DuPage. Its most striking feature is the waterfall as well as the 740 native plant species, most of which grow exclusively in DuPage County and nowhere else. In addition to that, Downers Grove has a number of shopping centers and restaurants that include Finley Square Shopping Center located at the 1500 Block of Butterfield and Yorktown Center located 14 minutes away at Highland Avenue & Butterfield Road in Lombard. Furthermore, the most significant perk to owning property in Downers Grove is less than an hour from Chicago’s top attractions. One example is the Navy Pier located in the Streeterville neighborhood and extends 3,300 feet along the Chicago shoreline of Lake Michigan. It features tours from Shoreline Sightseeing cruises, Water Taxi service, Seadog Ventures, and Tall Ship Windy which is a 148-foot schooner modeled after the Great Lakes trading ships of the 17th century.
