Located 10 miles west of the Loop and less than an hour from downtown Chicago, Leyden Township was once called Orison. Until the 1870s, when the Chicago & Pacific Railroad laid railroad tracks through modern-day Leyden Township, the land in this area was mainly prairie land. Speculators from Chicago began to purchase a number of the smaller farms, subdividing the land into housing developments. One of the most important people to first settle in the area was a man named David Everett, who moved to the area in 1833. Everett owned a home that once served as a trading post, and being a Methodist preacher, he would hold religious services in his house along with other Methodist preachers in the area. In 1850, the Plank Road Company constructed a facility in the area to make it easier to build the township’s first wood plank road.It wasn’t long until farming gave way to residential development, and Orison was named Elmwood Park. Between 1920 and 1928, the town experienced a growth spurt and then experienced another one during and after World War II. Today, Leyden Township remains unincorporated.
