Located 30 miles west of the Loop, West Chicago is said to be the first Chicago community created as a consequence of the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad. The railroad was finished in 1849 and extended to Elgin. In order to accommodate the railroad, a water and fuel facility and a roundhouse were built for the locomotives, as well as a hotel and eating house for railroad employees and travelers. One of the most prominent pioneers to have been involved with the initial development of West Chicago was a man named John B. Turner, president of Chicago and North Western Transportation Company, who donated a portion of his acreage to a Congregational church. In 1857, Joseph McConnell platted a portion of land a little north of Turner’s land and named it “Town of Turner” out of appreciation for Turner’s land donation to the church. In the beginning, most of the settlers were of English and Irish descent. Nevertheless, Germans began arriving in the 1860s, followed by immigrants from Mexico in the 1910s. By the turn of the century, West Chicago had grown exponentially, with a number of new businesses and employment opportunities. In addition to that, the Chicago, Wheaton and Western Railway was built, further increasing traffic to the area.
