Located in Cook County, Westchester is a western suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The area was occupied in the mid-19th century by German farmers and was purchased in 1924 by Samuel Insull. Insull planned to create an English-style village. Therefore, the town’s name and most of its street names derive from English roots. With the onset of the Great Depression, construction slowed but the population continued to increase in Westchester. In 1956 the Eisenhower Interstate System led to the creation of nearby expressways, including Interstates 290 and 294, which now provide convenient travel to commuters and visitors.
Today Westchester has little open land, with the exception of eighty-five acres in Wolf Road Prairie. The village includes part of Bemis Wood Forest Preserve and expands to the north and east to Eisenhower Expressway (Interstate 290). Chicago Highlands Club, Meadowlark Golf course, and a portion of the Chicago Zoological Park lie within Westchester. Convenient thoroughfares include Interstates 294 and 88. The town offers residents ten parks and a variety of facilities, as well as public and private schools. Lighted tennis courts, a public pool, banquet facility and fitness center with personal fitness instructors are just a few of the amenities found here. Westchester also hosts festivals and events throughout the year, including Movies in the Park, music concerts, and block parties. The nearby schools of Triton College and Elmhurst College provide opportunities for advanced education. Hospitals are conveniently located close by and include Loyola Hospital, Hines Hospital, and Elmhurst Hospital.
