Willowbrook is a village in the Downers Grove township. Before the 1830s, the area had been inhabited by various Native American tribes, mainly the Potawatomi and Sauk. During the 1830s, European settlers began to arrive in the area and staking claims to land. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Willowbrook area was primarily farmland. Restaurants and a gas station were built to accommodate Route 66 after its construction in the late 1920s. The Ridgemoor Homeowners Association began to push for incorporation in order to prevent low-income housing developments in the area. The village was finally incorporated in 1960 and named after willow trees growing along a creek in the area. In 1975, the first industrial parks were built, including the 105-acre Willowbrook Executive Plaza and housed high-tech electronics and plastics-related firms. Additionally, many shopping centers, hotels, and retail stores were built along Willowbrook's primary artery, Route 83.
Potential home buyers looking to purchase a home in Willowbrook are attracted to the area for a long list of reasons, with the most prominent one being that Chicago is only 27 minutes away via I-290 East. Another aspect that residents enjoy is the small-town atmosphere maintained by Willowbrook. A great example of this is Morton Arboretum, covering 1,700 acres and featuring 200,000 cataloged plants, 4,100 different plant species, along with hiking and cycling. Then there is Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve located in southern DuPage. Its most striking feature is the waterfall as well as the 740 native plant species, most of which grow specifically in DuPage County and nowhere else. In addition to that, Willowbrook has a number of shopping centers and restaurants that include Finley Square Shopping Center located at the 1500 Block of Butterfield and Yorktown Center located 14 minutes away at Highland Avenue & Butterfield Road in Lombard. Furthermore, the greatest perk to owning property in Willowbrook is being less than an hour from Chicago’s top attractions. One example is the Navy Pier located in the Streeterville neighborhood and extends 3,300 feet along the Chicago shoreline of Lake Michigan. It features tours from Shoreline Sightseeing cruises, the Water Taxi service, Seadog Ventures, and the Tall Ship Windy, a 148-foot schooner modeled after the Great Lakes trading ship of the 17th century.
